Jonathon Fernandez will not be returning to Nethermoor for a second season with Guiseley.

Assistant manager Wayne Benn confirmed that the tricky Spanish winger was not prospering in non-league football.

That may have a knock-on effect at Valley Parade, as Fernandez had been house sharing with City’s Chilean import Willy Topp.

“There is no question about the lad’s ability but Jonathon will not be coming back to us for the new campaign,” said Benn.

“The language barrier was a bit difficult. It takes foreign players time to settle in another country.

“I think that’s why City were happy to see him and Willy sharing because they both speak Spanish and were helping each other not to feel too homesick.

“Willy and the people at City actually helped us out with the communication problems that we encountered with Jonathon.”

Benn added: “Players coming from other countries, especially the Latin quarters, don’t always adapt to the English game because of its physical side.

“The UniBond Premier Division is a very tough place to play your football and it wasn’t the right environment for someone with Jonathon’s silky skills. He should look for a League club because you get more time and space. I know that from past experience.”
