Bradford resident and founder of the Bradford-based British Asian Rugby Association (BARA), Dr Ikram Butt, has shared his thoughts in advance of the first ever British Asian Rugby Awards - set to take place in the iconic venue of Speaker's House, within the Palace of Westminster.

Dr Butt, who is the first British Asian to represent England in either code of rugby, said of the event: "The British Asian Rugby Awards are a landmark moment to recognise the success of South Asians who have inspired others, transformed perceptions, and impacted their communities.

"Hosting the event in Parliament underscores its importance and the growing recognition of representation.

"BARA has always sought to use rugby as a medium for social change and cultural understanding, fostering community cohesion."

The awards ceremony aims to honour the achievements of British South Asians in both rugby league and union.

The invitation-only event will welcome key figures from the world of politics, rugby, business, media, and community leadership.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the House, commented: "It is a privilege to host the British Asian Rugby Awards in Speaker’s House.

"This event is a testament to the growing representation and success of British South Asians in rugby.

"Such an initiative celebrates athletic achievement and highlights the power of sport in fostering unity, respect, and diversity in our society.

"I commend BARA for their dedication to inclusivity in rugby and am honoured to support their efforts."

Phil Davies, former Welsh captain & international coach, and current director of rugby at World Rugby, added: "As rugby continues to grow globally, it is inspiring to see initiatives like the British Asian Rugby Awards celebrating the contributions of diverse communities to the sport.

"Rugby’s power to unite and inspire is evident in events like this, fostering representation and inclusivity.

"The sport’s spirit is about coming together, breaking down barriers, and creating opportunities for all, driving positive change on and off the field."

Lord Addington, vice president of the UK Sports Association and captain of the Commons & Lords RFU Team, said: "It is wonderful to see the British Asian Rugby Awards highlighting the achievements of British South Asians in rugby.

"I look forward to being part of this significant event that reflects the unifying power of the sport."

The inaugural British Asian Rugby Awards will take place on November 4, from 6pm to 8pm.
