YORKSHIRE require just 10 more points to guarantee promotion to Division One, meaning a draw will almost certainly suffice in their final game against Northamptonshire at Headingley next week.

They have moved into this position thanks to a remarkable run of five wins in their last six Vitality County Championship games.

Their latest was sealed this morning against Glamorgan in Cardiff, with Yorkshire claiming victory by 186 runs.

Promotion looked hugely unlikely when Yorkshire failed to win any of their first seven Division Two games this season, despite having England superstars Joe Root and Harry Brook available for five of those apiece.

But starting with a crushing innings victory over Gloucestershire at Scarborough in late June, the White Rose County have been near faultless.

Ben Coad has been the outstanding player in the second half of the season and the opening bowler came to the fore once again this week at Glamorgan, taking four wickets in each innings.

He has now taken 52 scalps this season, the joint-most in the division alongside Middlesex’s Toby Roland-Jones.

Roland-Jones and his team-mates are the only ones who can stop Yorkshire going up alongside already-promoted Sussex.

But that requires Middlesex to win at the league leaders next week, while hoping for a huge favour from Northants at Headingley.

That will be a tough task for the visitors, with Yorkshire very much in form, and Jonny Tattersall’s side were always on top in this week’s win at Glamorgan.

Yorkshire were put into bat on the opening day, but James Wharton (63) got them off to a good start.

They did slip to 194-5, but George Hill (90) and Dom Bess (50) batted superbly in the middle order to take Yorkshire to 361 all out, Andy Gorvin taking 4-67.

Coad and his fellow opening bowler Matt Fisher put Glamorgan on the back foot early on in their reply, taking two wickets apiece to reduce the hosts to 37-4.

Only Colin Ingram (82) ever seemed to get on top of the bowling, and the Welshmen were eventually dismissed for 239, Coad and Fisher sharing identical figures of 4-55.

Yorkshire’s second innings began superbly, with Adam Lyth (55) and Fin Bean (57) outing on 115 for the opening wicket.

But only Tattersall (40) and Bess (47) contributed otherwise, as the visitors were dismissed for 273, James Harris claiming 5-73.

That left Glamorgan needing 396 to win, and given they tied a game with Gloucestershire chasing 593 earlier in the season, some Yorkshire fans were worried.

But Coad worked his magic yet again, taking four wickets yesterday afternoon and evening to reduce Glamorgan to 129-7 at the close of play.

Yorkshire returned this morning knowing rain was expected in the afternoon, but once Fisher removed stubborn opener Asa Tribe (58 from 155 balls) half an hour into the day’s play, the game was effectively over.

Jordan Thompson (2-35) had the glory of claiming the final wicket, removing the impressive Harris for 49 as Glamorgan were bowled out for 209.

Coad finished with figures of 4-51, while Fisher backed him up again, taking 3-49.
