YORKSHIRE superstar Joe Root drew level with his former team-mate Alastair Cook yesterday, with the pair now having made the joint-most Test centuries for England.

Root, who warmed up for the international summer by playing five Vitality County Championship Division Two games for Yorkshire, scored a stunning 143 on the first day of yesterday’s game against Sri Lanka.

His century helped push England above 300 runs in the Second Test at Lord’s and puts them in a good position to wrap up the series with a game to spare.

Root hit his first Test century 11 years ago, scoring 104 on his home ground against New Zealand.

One of England’s greatest ever payers, Root has scored more than 12,000 Test runs to date, at an average of 50.71.

He has scored the seventh-most runs in Test history, and only needs 127 more to overtake Sri Lanka icon Kumar Sangakkara to move into sixth on that list.

Root's long-time England and Yorkshire team-mate Jonny Bairstow was also in the runs yesterday.

He blazed a brilliant 107 not out against Middlesex in the County Championship, his first first-class century for Yorkshire since 2016.
