YORKSHIRE opener Dawid Malan has announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect.

Malan, who has only featured in Vitality Blast cricket for his county this year, had hoped to force his way into England’s white-ball plans.

But with neither he nor team-mate Jonny Bairstow in England’s latest limited-overs squads, which were announced earlier this week, he has called it a day.

The 36-year-old played 62 times for England in T20 cricket, scoring 16 half centuries and one hundred, and was at one point ranked as the best batsman in the world in that format.

He also played 30 One-Day Internationals for England, averaging an outstanding 55.76, while he scored 1,074 runs in 22 Test matches.

It remains to be seen whether international retirement means Malan plays more for Yorkshire going forward.

While he has opted out of being part of their Vitality County Championship squads, he has taken on a coaching role with the red-ball side.

And his input seems to have had a positive impact, with Yorkshire seemingly in a three-way tussle for promotion alongside Middlesex and Sussex with four games of the season to go.

They face Middlesex tomorrow at Headingley, with the winner set to take a giant step towards a return to the top flight.
