NEW signing Joe Adams will “run all day” for City in midfield.

The 20-year-old has penned a season-long loan deal from Wigan in time to be involved in tomorrow’s home clash with Bromley.

And Valley Parade fans have been told that Graham Alexander has recruited a young player full of energy.

Adams spent the second half of last season in League Two with a loan spell at Morecambe. He made 21 appearances and scored twice – including in his final game in a 3-3 draw with Swindon.

Shrimps expert Derek Quinn, who has covered the club for almost 30 years for BBC Radio Lancashire, predicts City have made a good signing.

“Joe is a natural athlete and he’ll run all day,” he said.

“He’s pretty much a box-to-box midfielder and a really good lad as well. He’ll fit in well with the group.

“His form tailed off a little bit towards the end of the season. But that’s probably no surprise because the team lost eight of the last 11 games.

“It was a big ask for him to come into a team that was starting to struggle a bit. But overall, he did really well and I think he’ll be a useful addition.”

City see Adams as a versatile option who can play as one of the “eights” in midfield or drop back into a deeper holding role - making him a direct replacement for Alex Gilliead by the looks of it.

Quinn added: “Morecambe play a 4-2-3-1 and he operated as the attacking midfielder. But he was often the last man because he was that fit.

“He’d do his defensive work as well. He can play anywhere.

“It will be a good learning curve for him as well playing in front of 16,000 home fans, especially at times when things aren’t going so well.”

Adams, who likens his style of play to Arsenal’s German international Kai Havertz, was born in Guernsey and played for his local team Ormer FC.

As a schoolboy, he once scored five goals for a Guerney Select 11 against Jersey.

Adams moved to Southampton on the mainland aged 16 and joined Eastleigh’s development academy. He got his first experience of men’s football with a short spell at Horndean in the Wessex League.

Adams then played 10 games in the Southern League for Sholing – where he was called up to the England Schoolboys under-18s squad.

He attracted league interest at the time and was invited for a trial with Barnsley before joining Wigan in the summer of 2022.

Adams spent time on loan with AFC Totton in the National League South before his half-season switch to Morecambe.

He has been a regular for Wigan under-21s but is yet to make a senior outing for the Latics. He was named on the bench in the Carabao Cup against Fleetwood in 2022 and Wrexham last season.
