Townville are through to the last eight of the ECB Vitality Club T20 after a dramatic win over host Middlesbrough in the Area Final last weekend.
With two balls of the final over to go, the North Yorkshire South Durham side needed just one run to win the match.
But with the two sides tied on 157-7, Middlesbrough’s captain and top scorer Jonathan Spillane (61) was run out by a good throw from Dushan Vimukthi.
The last ball brought further drama as Chris Holliday bowled Alfie Taylor-Clarke, meaning the scores finished level.
There was confusion on the pitch as the Townville players and the umpires expected a Super Over, but a loudspeaker announcement revealed Townville had won by virtue have lost two fewer wickets.
Townville official Lee Poulter said: “Nobody was quite sure about the rules.
“It was all a bit surreal, but we were delighted when we heard we had won.”
Townville were not at their best in the final at Acklam Park but still made a decent total of 157-7, which was built on useful contributions from Jack Hughes (29), Chris Grey (21 not out), Vimukthi (20) and Abdul Wahid (20).
There was also a late flurry from Tom Chippendale, which included a last ball six that ultimately proved decisive to the outcome.
Holliday and Wahid were the star performers in the satisfying seven-wicket semi-final win over their Yorkshire Premier League North rivals Castleford earlier in the day.
Holliday smashed 83 from 43 balls and Wahid struck an unbeaten 52 as Townville breezed past their opponents’ score of 148-6 in 14.3 overs.
Callum Rowe (70) top scored for Castleford as spinners Hughes (1-16) and Vimukthi (1-18) kept things tight.
Next for Townville is the Northern regional final at Denby in Derbyshire on Sunday, August 25.
