THE Bradford & District Union of Golf Clubs held its Clubman Championship at the weekend, with Matthew Mould producing a hugely impressive performance to claim victory at Keighley.

He shot a gross 76 in tricky conditions to take the title by three strokes from Lee Holmes (Ilkley), TJ Berry (Shipley) and David Barbour (Northcliffe).

Mould, who plays out of Bracken Ghyll Club, has a handicap of seven, the joint-lowest of any of the competitors in action at Keighley.

That placed him third in the nett standings on 69, with poor Holmes finishing as runner-up there too.

He scored 67, but was beaten on countback by West Bradford’s Ryan Knowles, who plays with a 14 handicap.

The whole competition was played with a 95 per cent handicap allowance.

The individual events in the Bradford Union will take a back seat over the next couple of weeks.

This weekend sees the Second Division Team Championship take place at Manor Golf Club, while Bradford take on York in the Yorkshire Inter-District Union Championship.

A young Bradford side had a tough start to the year, and successive hammerings by Harrogate and East Riding, after a narrow defeat in their opening fixture against Halifax-Huddersfield, left them bottom of the eight-team table.

But they impressed last time out, thrashing Leeds 23-13 at Baildon Golf Club, lifting them off the bottom at the expense of winless York.

The pair will swap positions however if hosts York beat Bradford on Sunday at Fulford Golf Club.

And after this weekend’s team action, another marquee event for the Bradford Union is coming up on Sunday, August 11.

The Team Championship event will take place that day at Shipley, with Bradford Golf Club looking to retain the title they won at Woodhall Hills last year.

Meanwhile, Bradford Moor’s Iain Walker is the first man through to the semi-finals in the Union’s prestigious Amateur Matchplay Championship.

He knocked out defending champion Paddy Young (Northcliffe) with an excellent 4&2 win in the last-eight.
