BRADFORD heavyweight boxer Dan Garber got back on the winning trail last weekend after his devastating first-round knockout defeat against teenage sensation Moses Itauma in March.

It was a totally homegrown affair last Saturday, with the Cedar Court Hotel playing host to a bout between Garber (6-3) and his fellow Bradford native Ryan Labourn (0-16-2).

Having never won any of his previous 18 professional bouts, Labourn was the massive underdog, but he performed admirably in the four-round match up.

In a tightly-fought contest, referee Darren Sarginson eventually ruled in Garber’s favour, as he took the win 39-38 on points.

The all-Bradford bout was the supporting act to the marquee match-up of the night, a welterweight tussle between Jacob Quinn and Michael King.

Huddersfield-born Quinn was favourite, after an excellent draw last time out against Callum Blockley, who has won all 12 of his other professional bouts and is fighting for the vacant Midlands Area Super Lightweight belt this October in Leicester against Sajid Abid (14-2).

But Quinn (8-3-1) got a nasty surprise, as King (5-2) outpointed him to win 78-75 in the eight-round bout.

It was a good night of boxing all round in Bradford and Garber will have been pleased to win, and also just to get in the ring.

His fellow Bradford boxers Fezan Shahid and Connor Lawrence were both due to fight this month, but their bouts did not end up going ahead.
