MORLEY will be playing in the Bradford Premier League’s Rigg Bash T20 Group A Cup finals day on home soil after stunning Bradford side Jer Lane at Park Avenue on Thursday night.
The Division One side faced an almighty task to try and beat the Premier Division leaders, with both battling it out to claim the last Finals Day spot alongside Pudsey St Lawrence, New Farnley and Townville.
But the underdogs held their nerve in a tight finish, winning by eight runs to reach this Sunday’s showpiece event at their own Scatcherd Lane ground.
Jer Lane needed 22 from the final two overs with five wickets in hand to overhaul Morley’s challenging total of 196-7, but tight bowling skipper Matthew Dowse and Jamil Aslam shut them out.
Jer Lane had looked the likely winners while Mosun Hussain (52) and Hamzah Iqbal (41) were at the wicket, but the rate required began to grow once both were removed by overseas Asel Sigera.
Earlier in the evening, Morley made a bright start with Sreenath Joy (31) and James McNichol (33) putting on 58 for the first wicket inside five overs.
Sigera backed up their efforts by making 61 from 36 balls, with three sixes and seven fours.
He has now made 290 runs in four matches and is the competition’s top scorer.
Spinners Kyme Tahirkheli (2-27) and Amir Hussain (2-31) were the best of the bowlers for Jer Lane, and at least kept Morley under 200.
But despite the best efforts of Hussain and Iqbal in reply, that total proved too much for the Bradford side to chase down.
The Group A Cup is competed for between the sides in the top two divisions of the Bradford Premier League, and Finals Day comes exactly a week after the Group B Cup showpiece.
The Group B Cup is competed for between sides in Division Two and Division Three of the Bradford Premier League and Heckmondwike & Carlinghow came out on top last Sunday.
They beat Lightcliffe by six wickets after an explosive batting performance in the final, retaining the trophy in the process.
