NEWS that Bobby Pointon is signed and sealed has put a smile on the face of every City fan.

“One of our own” remains very much part of the fixtures and fittings at Valley Parade.

The local lad from Low Moor whetted the appetite of the claret and amber faithful with a debut season to remember.

As we count down the three weeks until the start of the new League Two campaign, here are the four magic moments that saw Pointon seize centre stage.

THE FIRST GOAL

Bobby Pointon had been out of the picture in the final weeks of the Mark Hughes era.

But Kevin McDonald brought him back in at the start of his caretaker spell – and was rewarded with a first senior goal.

Pointon kneed the ball home from close range after keeper Murphy Mahoney parried Brad Halliday’s shot and Jamie Walker swooped on the rebound.

“Bobby didn’t disappoint,” said McDonald. “I thought he was brilliant and was absolutely shattered.

“I thought it was an own goal! But fair play to him, he creates chances and gets himself into good areas.

“Bobby will continue to score and get assists. Knowing his family were here today, I’m sure he’ll enjoy it more than anyone.”

KOP A LOAD OF THAT

Bobby Pointon had always dreamed of scoring in front of the Kop.

He had sat in the upper tier as a City fanatic growing up, watching his idol Nahki Wells and thinking that one day he could do the same.

That fantasy became reality on Good Friday with a screamer from the edge of the box against Tranmere.

Pointon had already smacked the inside of the post with one sighter – but there was no let-off for former City loanee Luke McGee in the visiting goal second time around.

“We’ll give him the opportunities and he has to take them,” said boss Graham Alexander.

KNEESY DOES IT

It was a move straight from the training ground at Apperley Bridge.

A weakness in Barrow’s closing down from corners was gloriously exploited in the final away game.

The Bluebirds only half dealt with a corner and Pointon was onto it in a flash. One touch to steady, the next to lash home with that cannon of a left foot.

Pointon peeled away to the bank of jubilant City fans to the side of the pitch and launched into a celebratory knee slide towards them.

“I never let the pressure get to me,” he said afterwards. “I get on with my game and just enjoy my football.”

THE FINAL FLING

Bobby Pointon was never going to sign off such a special season quietly.

And he made it two goals in two games to bring the curtain down with another gem.

There were shades of Cumbria four days before as the goal originated from a City corner.

Richie Smallwood kept it alive and fed Pointon in the D – again the touch to line up his sights and again a left-foot laser arcing into the top corner of the net.

The Kop erupted but Pointon remained the coolest customer on the park.

“I could have 100,000 people shouting my name and I’ll just go out and enjoy my football. That’s all I’m here to do.”

Now City fans will be licking their lips at the prospect of Pointon producing plenty more where that came from.
