A six-wicket haul by Ben Coad carried Yorkshire to a crushing victory over Derbyshire by an innings and 204 runs on the third day of the pair’s Vitality County Championship Division Two match at Chesterfield.

In an incredibly one-sided contest, Derbyshire were bowled out for a paltry 76 on the first morning of the match on Sunday, Sri Lankan paceman Vishwa Fernando taking 5-30 and Jordan Thompson backing him up with 4-31.

It was a shambolic batting effort from the home side, with No.9 Zak Chappell their top scorer with just 18.

Yorkshire did not have things all their own way in their reply, finding themselves on 165-5 at one point, but then James Wharton and Jonny Tattersall completely took the game away from the hosts.

Young Wharton produced a career-best score of 188, while keeper Tattersall managed 107, the pair putting on a mammoth 241, Yorkshire’s best-ever sixth-wicket partnership against Derbyshire.

The visitors eventually declared on 451-9 yesterday morning, Luis Reece surviving the worst of the carnage to take 4-74 from his 24 overs.

But he could not prevent Yorkshire from claiming maximum batting points, and the visitors soon got back to work with the ball in impressive fashion.

Coad, on his return from a back injury, took 6-30, while Fernando impressed again by claiming 4-58 to finish with nine wickets in the match.

Derbyshire were bowled out for 171 before tea, with the only real resistance coming from skipper David Lloyd, who made 57 and Ross Whiteley, who bludgeoned five sixes in his 52 before being the last man out.

It was the first time Yorkshire had won back-to-back championship matches by an innings since June 2015 when they beat Nottinghamshire and Durham.

After those massive victories against Gloucestershire at Scarborough and over Derbyshire in Chesterfield, Yorkshire’s chances of promotion have increased significantly.

They have rocketed up to third place in the table in the space of a week, now only sat behind leaders Sussex and second-placed Middlesex.

The top two in the table will go up at the end of the season.
