SOUTH Bradford Golf Club kicked off their season in style by winning the 9-Hole Clubs Team Championship at East Bierley on Sunday.

Having won both the 2021 and 2023 editions of the competition, the four-ball of Andrew Busfield, Scot Minto, Archie Rowntree and Oliver Tasker made no mistake in getting their campaign off to a flying start.

They scored a gross total of 208 points to comfortably come away with victory, with Ghyll, who came 2nd, scoring 226 points. Bradford Moor finished in 3rd with a score of 229.

Individually, Busfield and Tasker finished in 1st and 2nd, with respective gross scores of 67 and 70.

Reflecting on the club’s display at East Bierley, captain Tom O’Hara, said: “The lads were brilliant.

“It was always going to be a tough one with it being the first competition of the season but they were solid.

“We said before that we needed to use our heads and not get too greedy when approaching the greens and that served us well.

“All in all, it was a wonderful effort and I'm incredibly pleased and proud of the lads for bringing home the silverware for the 2nd year running.”

The club captain went on to say: “It would also be remiss of me not to mention the Bradford Union Captain Andy Busfield.

“Despite being our most experienced player by some measure, he continues to defy the years, scoring an unmatched gross -1 par on the day and deservedly winning both the individual Gross and Net prizes.”

This Sunday, it’s Bradford Union’s first match of the campaign as they take on a combined side of Halifax and Huddersfield at Bracken Gyhll.

Busfield, who captains the Union, is eagerly anticipating the first contest.

He said: “Myself and the team are looking forward to Sunday as it’s our first match of the season.

“After what has been a long off-season due to the constant rain, and with courses struggling to keep open, it will be great to finally get underway after a great week with South Bradford last time out.

Andreas Kkais, from Bradford, and Will Thornber will be playing in their first match for the Union, and they’ll join a team consisting of juniors, while they’ll also team up with some more experienced players like Rob Hillas, Dane Bairstow, Oliver Tasker and Oliver young.

After just missing out on winning the Captain’s Salver last year, just been pipped by James Darcy and Archie Rowntree, the Union will be eager to get their hands on victory this time around.
