Bradford darts ace Joe Cullen produced another solid run on the PDC Pro Tour on Monday, but he was outshone by an old master.
Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld, a five-time world champion, rolled back everyone of his 56 years to claim his first PDC ranking title since February 2021, beating Stephen Bunting in the Players Championship 5 final in Hildesheim, Germany.
Back to Wyke star Cullen, and he began Monday’s event by sweeping Matthew Dennant aside 6-2, averaging just under 100 in the process.
He was not quite as hot against Joshua Richardson, but emerged as a 6-3 winner in the pair’s last-64 clash.
Despite not being at his best against young Dutchman Gian van Veen in the last-32, Cullen won that encounter 6-4 to set up a clash against the unfancied James Hurrell.
But Hurrell played better in that encounter, and moved into the quarter-finals with a 6-2 win over his Bradford opponent.
Van Barneveld then beat Hurrell 6-3 before edging a 7-6 win over old foe Gary Anderson in the semi-final, saving two match darts in the process.
By comparison, the final was a breeze for the Dutchman, as he thrashed Bunting 8-1 to wrap up a victory which is also likely to secure his qualification for the World Championship later this year.
Players Championship 6 took place yesterday, also in Hildesheim, but on this occasion, Bradford ace Cullen got nowhere.
He lost in his opener, producing a below-par performance to suffer a surprise defeat against underdog Swede Oskar Lukasiak.
The final of Players Championship 6 was between Dave Chisnall and Dirk van Duijvenbode, who had beaten Ross Smith and Daryl Gurney respectively in their last-four matches.
In an enjoyable showpiece, far closer than the one between van Barneveld and Bunting the previous day, Chisnall came out on top, beating his Dutch rival 8-6 to take home the trophy.
