A BAILDON spinner took his 1,190th wicket in the Bradford Premier League over the weekend, achieving a remarkable record in the process.
Leggie Jamie Abbott is now the league’s all-time record second team wicket-taker, overtaking the mammoth benchmark set by Hanging Heaton seamer Pete Byrne.
Abbott achieved the feat in thrilling fashion against Cleckheaton.
Needing two wickets to break Byrne’s record, Abbott delighted the home crowd at Jenny Lane by bowling out James Ives for a single.
That made the Cleckheaton score 114-6, and saw him level the record of 1,189 dismissals.
But with time running out and Cleck on 120-7, Abbott removed the final three batsmen without a further run being added, soaring past Byrne’s total to make it 1,192 second-team wickets in total.
Abbott was not needed with the bat, as despite Baildon wobbling on 96-6, an unbroken seventh-wicket partnership of 27 saw them over the line by four wickets.
