LEEDS United have announced the signing of United States midfielder Weston McKennie on loan from Juventus until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent move.

The 24-year-old has moved to Elland Road for a reported £1million loan fee, with the signing subject to a work permit.

McKennie has made 41 senior appearances for his country and started in all four of their World Cup matches at Qatar 2022 (he is pictured above, left, by Press Association photographer Mike Egerton in their match against England).

He is the third USA international to team up with Leeds’ American head coach Jesse Marsch after Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson joined the club last summer.

McKennie began his professional career at Schalke, making 91 appearances in all competitions before becoming the first American to sign for Juventus, initially on loan, in 2020.

He has made 96 appearances in all competitions for Juve, scoring 13 goals.

McKennie became Leeds’ third first-team arrival of the January window following the signings of striker Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim and defender Max Wober from RB Salzburg.

The American could make his debut in Sunday’s Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Leeds have also signed a player for the future in 18-year-old centre-back Diogo Monteiro from Swiss Super League side Servette FC.

Monteiro made his top-flight debut for Servette at the age of 16, becoming the third-youngest player to make an appearance in the Swiss Super League.

He played seven times in all competitions for the Maroons, who currently sit third in this season’s league table.

The defender has also made a number of international appearances through the various age groups for Portugal, representing his country over 30 times from Under-15 to Under-19 level so far.

Monteiro has agreed a three-and-a-half year contract at Elland Road, and will initially join up with Michael Skubala’s Under-21 squad at the club.
