A BRADFORD player continued his fine form with success in a pool team event after he missed out in a thrilling individual final.

Karl Boyes was part of a team that progressed to the last 16 of the Pairs Cup.

He joined forces with Australian Jake McCartney for a dominant display in week 15 of the Ultimate Pool tournament.

They dominated at the table at Monday’s action, as they became only the second team in Pairs Cup history to win all three group games and reach the target of four frames in each match in a group.

The red-hot duo finished the event, held in Newcastle-Under-Lyme with a frame aggregate of 12-1, the best record of any qualifiers so far.

The success in the Pairs Cup capped off a fine few days for Boyes after he reached the final of the Players Championship last Sunday.

Boyes, nicknamed β€˜Box Office’, reached the final after being named winner of group one, which included Keighley potter Chris Melling.

Boyes reached the final after defeating Gareth Potts and would face Ronan McCarthy in the event’s showpiece, set format clash on Sunday afternoon.

The Bradford ace started the strongest, claiming the contest’s first set 5-2. The second set produced a 2-2 draw, with both Boyes and McCarthy taking half a point apiece.

McCarthy, from Northern Ireland, then regrouped to storm to an overall victory, as he claimed the third set with a 5-2 win. This set up a thrilling finish in the fourth set, but Boyes missed out, as McCarthy claimed the title with a 5-3 triumph in leg four.

McCarthy was a late replacement into the event after Michael Hill had to withdraw from action due to illness.

In the Pairs Cup action, Boyes and McCartney kicked off with two successive 4-0 victories over both teams of Kevin Kirkham and Garry Southern and then Brian Halcrow and Andrew Russell.

Having already qualified, Boyes and McCartney finished the group stage with a 4-1 triumph over Paul Willis and his father James.

Boyes’ success marks a fine few months for him at the table, since he swapped his work as a pundit to join the Ultimate Pool circuit last summer.

He qualified for last week’s Finals Weekend after he topped the standings after a round-robin event last summer, before winning a semi-final clash.

He went into the semi-finals as top seed and defeated Shane Thompson in the earlier event’s final, with a 9-5 9-6 win to complete an overall 2-0 sets victory.

Boyes’ form was recognised by Ultimate Pool on social media.

The organisation posted on its official Twitter yesterday: β€œKarl Boyes Appreciation Post. Since joining the Ultimate Pool professional ranks in the summer, Box Office has already reached: A Pro Series Semi-Final; The Players Championship Final and The second phase of the ongoing Pairs Cup.”
