Matt Clarke has snapped up a "take it or leave it" deal to stay at Valley Parade for another year.
The big defender, currently crocked with a knee injury, will today sign a new City contract for less money.
Clarke is the third player after Paul Heckingbottom and Peter Thorne to agree to a reduced offer for next term.
Because of his injury-hit record since arriving from Darlington, the contract will be heavily appearance-based.
Clarke has made 18 starts this season but only 24 in two years at the club.
"He understands that it has to be incentive-based because of the amount of games he's played," said boss Stuart McCall.
"It was a one-off offer, take it or leave it, and I'm pleased with Clarkey's attitude because he has taken quite a large drop in his wage.
"We all know injuries are part and parcel of the game but there are lots of things you can do to prevent muscle tissue problems like little strains and pulls. He's a naturally fit lad but needs to look after himself and he wasn't always doing things professionally earlier in the season.
"But to be fair to the lad, he has knuckled down, come in on his days off on occasions and done a lot better. He knows there are things he can do to help himself and he is focused.
"At this level, there's no doubt that if Clarkey plays to his full potential he can be one of the top defenders. He has the height, pace and strength you need at the back and will be a good asset for us as long as he maintains his fitness."
Clarke, 27, has been sweating on a new deal since suffering his current injury two months ago during a block tackle on Joe Colbeck in training. He has missed the last 13 games and will not be recovered in time to feature in the final three.
Clarke said: "Obviously you do get a little bit worried when you are injured and out of contract so this has come as a massive relief.
"It's been a bit of a nightmare couple of years because of the injuries. The little niggles where you are out for two or three weeks are more frustrating than the one I've got at the moment, which could have happened to anybody.
"I'm not too disheartened about that, although obviously I'd much rather be out there playing again.
"But I've been relatively pleased with my form when I was fit and involved.
"You do need a little run in the team to get some match fitness and I had a decent little partnership going with David Wetherall. I'm very happy at this club and to stay for another year is great.
"Hopefully now I can look forward to an injury-free season and prove to myself that I can play a full year."
