The appearance of two of the players from England's only World Cup-winning team at Horsfall Stadium on Saturday will surely leave Avenue's meeting with Bridlington Town playing second fiddle.

Sir Geoff Hurst, the man who netted a hat-trick in the 4-2 win over West Germany at the original Wembley, and Jack Charlton will be in attendance.

Charlton is a Leeds United legend as well as one of the men who lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy. He partnered skipper, the late, great Sir Bobby Moore, in the centre of defence in the 1966 final.

"The two men are embedded in the very history of football in this country, the iconic images of them holding the World Cup on the lap of honour will always be in the public eye," said Avenue manager Benny Phillips.

"Bringing them here, on a day when the club is holding a challenge for children from local schools, is another initiative from this forward-thinking club.

"It will introduce Sir Geoff and Jackie to a very young audience and also make them available to the supporters of Avenue who are old enough to remember the final.

"When that game was being played at Wembley, Bradford Park Avenue was a Football League club. We still have some of the fans from those days coming every week and I feel we are putting something back into the game for them.

"We are helping keep memories alive while creating new ones and also giving something to the community."

The Bradford public can rub shoulders with the World Cup heroes and the young players from the schools could win a share of £1,000 in prize money.

"I just hope the weather is kind, it would be nice to see a sunny day and a very good turn-out," added Phillips.

Phillips has his squad focused on the game because they have a good opportunity to maintain the pressure on UniBond Division One North leaders Curzon Ashton.

Avenue actually lost a place in the table in midweek, slipping from second to third, as they were busy booking themselves a place in the semi-finals of the West Riding County Cup.

Back in the league, Skelmersdale United, who were third, leapfrogged Avenue with an away win. At Curzon! That leaves Avenue five points off top spot but with two games in hand on both clubs above them.

"The chance is there and I think it will be until the end of the season. My concern is our fixtures, the games within our control. We didn't lose the league when we lost to Curzon a couple of weeks ago - nothing is ever settled in January."

Phillips is awaiting medical reports on skipper Steve Connors, Paul Collins and midfielder Tom Baker before finalising his squad for Saturday.

Defender Lincoln Adams and forward Mark Jones (back from a loan spell) are definitely back in contention.
