Airienteers had four winners as they competed at Tankersley, north of Sheffield, in a regional event run by Sheffield Orienteering Club.

The area provides a network of gently sloping woodland with intricate contour detail, due to historic coal and iron workings.

The event, with results counting towards national rankings, attracted a sizeable field and Airienteers runners headed a quartet of age-group categories.

They were David Bowman (M35), Tom Crowther (M70), Susan Stevens (W55) and Hilary Allen (W60), while just missing out on top spot were Joe Woodley (M12) and Beth Woodley (W14) in second.

There were also good runs by clubmates George Stevens (M18, fourth in the 7.7km JM5 race), Dave Chapman (fourth in the 6.5km M55 race) and two members called Peter Jones (fourth and fifth in the 7.7km M50 race).

For the women, Joyce Marshall was third at W45 and Gill Ross was third at W60.

This weekend sees Airienteers hosting the latest in the Saturday O-Lite series at Rothwell Country Park, which is an ideal opportunity for those new to orienteering to give it a go. Starts are between 1pm and 2pm.

On Sunday, Airienteers have the choice of two regional events at Ulverston in the Lakes or at Caistor in Humberside.

Details of all these and other events can be found through the club's website at www.aire.org.uk.
