Silsden 3, Newcastle Town 1

The Cobbydalers maintained their hoodoo over Newcastle Town when they beat the Division One leaders despite having to make changes.

With players injured and suspended, manager Paul Schofield brought striker Dan Moriarty in for his first start of the campaign.

It paid off as Moriarty claimed two of the goals.

Schofield said: "We played really well. It was a cracking display from the lads. The only down side was Dan missing out on a hat-trick - I will have to have words with him!"

Any nerves the home side may have had about taking on the top team were settled early as they broke the deadlock in the second minute.

It was a cross from Moriarty that was controlled and superbly volleyed home by Martin Packer.

Moriarty scored the second himself in the 36th minute following another through ball. An inch-perfect pass down the channel invited Moriarty to run onto it and he gave the goalkeeper no chance with a cool finish.

Silsden were hoping to reach the interval with their two-goal lead but Newcastle hit back in the 41st minute.

Goalkeeper Martin Foulger made a one-handed block from an effort following a set-piece but Simon Elvishaw netted in the ensuing scramble.

In the second half, Moriarty shot over after rounding the visitors' keeper and Andy King hit a sweet volley but the strong wind carried it over.

The home side did not panic and Moriarty atoned for his earlier miss when he turned his marker inside out before drilling in an angled shot from 20 yards to complete the scoring.
