The reason behind Eccleshill's recent bad run is no secret as the statistics just do not add up, with the Eagles shipping in 18 goals in their last five outings.

The half-dozen that Hallam plundered without reply in the last fixture was the worst but it was preceded by four other defensive nightmares. A five, two twos and a three, against neighbours Thackley, all added to the pain.

"We decided to gather the players together, have a bit of a meeting and thrash a few things out," admitted United boss Mick Watson.

"No-one is pressing the panic button but clean sheets are what we are after to pull things round a bit. We have to work hard, take our own chances and, obviously, create a meaner defensive unit."

United are not having too many problems in finding the net themselves. Forwards Andy Philp and Andy Howland are in double figures and skipper Chris Rosindale has chipped in nine from midfield.

Watson said: "Our scoring record isn't bad but I'm not blaming the defenders for our poor run. To be honest, some of the goals are down to individual mistakes. The players don't do that on purpose but it is costing us.

"These sorts of things are happening at key stages in games as well, which isn't helping the overall confidence of the squad. We have had a players' meeting, a heart to heart, and some of the older, more experienced players made some good points.

"It is not just down to the defenders to stop the opposition scoring, you defend from the front as soon as you lose possession. It's a team thing, so everyone has to knuckle down and work a bit harder."
