SKIPTON always knew playing away at Hemsworth was going to be a challenge, from previous years, and Saturday's league fixture turned out to be an utterly thrilling encounter once again.
With overcast conditions and a pitch in really good order, the match commenced with an unforced error by Skipton leading to a Hemsworth try close to the touch line within the first two minutes. This was converted by the Hemsworths goal kicker.
Straight after the kick off, Hemsworth applied more pressure leading to a penalty just wide of Skipton posts on the 22 which was converted for a 10-0 scoreline.
At the 17-minute mark, Skipton won a defensive lineout from Hemsworth, Charlie Brown wrapped around the back of the scrum and created an opportunity for Miff Smith to break through a tackle and score under the posts. The try was converted by Darren Greenwood (10 - 7).
In the19th minute, a penalty was awarded to Hemsworth for an illegal entry to the ruck which was converted by Hemsworth (13 - 7).
A knock on by Hemsworth from the restart on their 22 gave a scrum to Skipton which resulted in a penalty to Hemsworth for a Skipton player not releasing.
Skipton soon regained possession and were awarded a penalty for a high tackle five metres from the try line, just wide of the posts.
Skipton opted to take the scrum, and were awarded a further penalty for another infringement by the home side. Skipton opted for a further scrum and then gave away possession after knocking the ball on at the scrum.
With further pressure from the home side resulted in an unforced error by Skipton and Hemsworth touched down in the corner for 18 - 7.
From the restart Skipton applied further pressure in the opposition 22 which led to a penalty Skipton opted for a scrum. The visitors shifted the ball wide from the scrum resulting in Liam Sanctuary's debut try in wide out (18 - 12) and half-time soon arrived.
Hemsworth managed to squeeze a good converted try taking the score to 25 - 12, and then from open play Tom Lacey was put into space by Ed Harrison to go over the line. This was converted for 25 – 19.
Brad Nicholson moved to the wing, replacing Liam Sanctuary late in the second half and from broken play half back Jack McLeod made a break collecting the ball in the back field and dotted down for a try about 15 metres wide of the posts. Miff Smith converted the try for 25 – 26 to Skipton with minutes to go.
With confusion surrounding time left on the clock, the game restarted resulting in a lineout where Skipton infringed on their own 10-yard line giving a penalty. This was converted by Hemsworth, giving a 28 -26 lead to the home side. Skipton were now chasing the game and Hemsworth kicked deep into Skipton’s half. With a solid kick and chase the ensuing tackle by Hemsworth saw the ball spilling into open field, and Hemsworth scored again (33-26). REPORT BY: SIMON SMITH
