THE competitive golf season in the Bradford Union has finally come to a close, after a couple of epic weekends at Baildon.
And in Northcliffe’s centenary year, it was one of their men who stood out.
Oliver Young scooped the big end of season tournament prize, as he was crowned Amateur Matchplay champion.
Due to a clash with competitors still being in both tournaments, the Foursomes Matchplay was the following weekend, and the winners were Chris Foster and Mark Scott of South Bradford Golf Club.
And there was victory in the Handicap Matchplay competition for Campion joint-manager Lee Ashforth and his playing partner Ged Chadwick, who are both part of Headley Golf Club.
The Junior Matchplay sadly did not go ahead this year, but there are plenty of young talents to keep an eye on in the Bradford Union.
Arguably the best of all of them is Ben Rhodes, who is still only in his early twenties.
The South Bradford golfer won the prestigious Karl Curran Trophy (in association with the T&A), having also taken home the crown in 2020.
He was the nine-hole individual champion (gross) too, while Ben Barker of Bradford Moor Golf Club was the nine-hole individual champion (nett).
Bracken Ghyll was the venue where the seniors champion and veterans champion were crowned.
Both winners came from Cleckheaton Golf Club, with David Woodcock winning the former and Cec Bloice the latter.
There was more glory for Northcliffe, as not only did Oliver Young win the Amateur Matchplay and the club themselves hosts a successful Bradford Open, but Paddy Young had a double win.
He won the 36-hole Amateur Championship and the Jim Wade Trophy this season.
Clayton Golf Club were the winners of the always popular Sue Ryder Salver at Branshaw.
Andrew Busfield of South Bradford won the Captain’s Salver.
In the scratch league competitions, Cleckheaton won Division One, West Bradford Division Two and Hollins Hall Division Three.
