Rui Marques will be handed an improved contract by Leeds United in the summer after manager Dennis Wise advised him to wait.

Central defender Marques, who is again missing from the Leeds side at Crewe tomorrow night as he is away with Angola at the African Cup of Nations, was outstanding for United before joining up with his country.

Marques was keen to commit his future to the club before reporting for international duty but Wise told him he would be mad to put pen to paper on a new deal for League One wages when the club could be operating in the Championship next season.

Wise is so happy with Marques that he promised him a new contract at the end of the season even if the defender is injured.

Wise explained: "I made the promise to Rui because he has been very loyal to me and deserves to be on Championship wages if we go up.

"I can't pay him that money now because we have a ceiling on wages for playing in League One.

"Rui is happy to wait because he respects me and knows my word is my bond."

Meanwhile, Tore Andre Flo is set to keep his place in the attack against Crewe after fearing his career was over when a surgeon put the wrong sized screw into his foot.

The 34-year-old former Chelsea and Norway striker is ready to play a big part in the club's promotion push. Flo made his first start since January 20 in the 3-0 win against Northampton and keeps Tresor Kandol on the bench at the Alexandra Stadium.

Wise said: "Tore was out for nearly a year with the foot injury and he spent a lot of time worrying about it. At one stage he thought it might be curtains for his career but we told him to keep plodding away.

"The surgeon put the wrong sized screw in there so it had to come out.

"Tore has come back stronger and stronger. I had a chat with him two games before the last one and asked if he felt ready to start. He was honest and said no because he needed to do some more hard work.

"Tore's quality is there for all to see and it is good to have him back. Tresor's form had slightly dropped - he knew it and everyone knew it.

Now he has the competition he lacked earlier in the season and I am looking to sign a loan striker too."

New recruits - Seb Sorsa, Peter Sweeney, Bradley Johnson and Darren Kenton - could all figure tomorrow night. Alan Thompson and Matt Heath are available after suspensions.
