Harrogate Railway Athletic 2, Bradford Park Avenue 2

There was more late drama for Avenue today but unlike Saturday, when an injury-time equaliser went against them, they experienced the other side of the coin to snatch a draw at Railway.

It looked unlikely when they were 2-0 behind but they deserved at least that, for sheer effort.

It was another display of solid teamwork and the never-say-die attitude instilled by manager Benny Phillips.

The Bradford boss said: "At 2-0 down I would have settled for a point but I thought we were the better side.

"Credit to the players because they never gave up and if the game had lasted another five minutes we would have won it.

"We gave ourselves too much to do after a poor first half but whatever misgivings we have about individual players' decisions or skill levels, you can never level the accusation at them that they don't give their all."

It was old boys who came back to haunt Avenue with keeper Jacob Giles, who only left Horsfall Stadium a week ago, making a string of superb saves in the second half when the visitors were chasing the game, and centre back Rob Morgan, who scored Railway's second goal.

The only goal of the first half came when former Bantams youth Nick Smith went on a run and shot at goal. The ball was deflected off Paul Collins and the flight left Jon Worsnop stranded.

Morgan bundled in the second ten minutes after the break following a corner.

Avenue cut the deficit in the 72nd minute with a well-taken strike, Tom Baker netting an overhead kick from a Chris Gaghan cross.

Avenue skipper Steve Connors was credited with the equaliser in the first minute of stoppage time.

His angled drive was fumbled backwards by Giles, who then palmed the ball out but the eagle-eyed assistant referee signalled that the ball had crossed the line.
