Farsley Celtic 4 Gateshead 1

The Celts made the most of home advantage to win their FA Trophy first-round replay against Gateshead tonight but they had to come from a goal down against the UniBond Premier Division visitors.

Gateshead forced the replay by making it difficult for Blue Square Premier outfit Farsley last Saturday and earning a 1-1 draw.

The Celts overcame stern resistance once more to book themselves a visit from Alfreton Town in the second round.

Farsley were attacking in the tenth minute when Gareth Grant was caught in possession. A swift counter saw a through ball find David Southern and he rifled in the opener from the corner of the area.

Farsley got back into the game with a touch of fortune.

After a good break, Stephen Downes crossed from the flank and Gateshead defender James McClen headed past his own keeper off the post as he tried to clear the danger.

Celts boss John Deacey shuffled his pack and brought Chris Billy and Lee Tuck on at half-time. It was an inspired change as the pair shared the three second-half goals.

Farsley led for the first time when Steve Torpey flicked on a Simeon Bambrook corner just after the hour and Billy headed in at the far post.

A later Ashley Allanson shot was only parried by the visitors' keeper, who was struggling with an injury, and Tuck netted the rebound.

The final goal came from a late free kick. Bambrook whispered to Tuck before delivering the ball. It was inch perfect as Tuck arrived on cue to steer in a glancing header.
