Walsall 1 Leeds 1

Jonathan Douglas, Leeds' influential midfielder, will have a scan on the knee injury that saw him carried off on a stretcher just before the end of an untidy draw at Walsall.

Douglas twisted his knee when his studs caught in the turf as he charged down a shot and he could miss the hectic Christmas programme, though manager Dennis Wise is awaiting an up to date assessment of the player's injury before ruling him out.

Walsall may have started the season badly, by taking just two points from their first five games, but they have now lost just one of their last 16 matches and for long periods were the better side on Saturday.

United badly missed the physical presence of suspended striker Tresor Kandol, whose deputy Leon Constantine came in for his first league start and was later replaced by Tore Andre Flo.

After totalling seven goals and keeping clean sheets in their previous two matches, United struggled to create chances against a resolute Walsall defence.

Dennis Wise's men were fortunate after only nine minutes when Mark Bradley hit the bar from 25 yards, and although Tommy Mooney netted from the rebound he was flagged offside.

The game was 76 minutes old when Mooney's disappointment turned to joy as he punished slack defending at a corner by scrambling the ball over the line from a yard out after Casper Ankergren had blocked Bradley's shot.

At that stage there were fears that United would suffer their third league defeat of the season. However, after top scorer Jermaine Beckford fluffed an excellent chance, substitute Alan Thompson's injury-time free-kick was deflected into the net off Ian Westlake, to leave both men claiming the credit.

Douglas's painful departure left United to battle out the remainder of injury-time with ten men, having made all their three substitutions.

Wise said: "Hopefully Jonathan's injury won't be as bad as feared but we will have to wait and see.

"I couldn't see anyone winning the game. It wasn't a fantastic match and I was disappointed that they scored from a set play.

"The good thing is that we got back into the game. Ian Westlake and Alan Thompson are claiming the goal and I don't know whose it was. We were just pleased to get a point out of the game. You could see why Walsall had lost just one of their previous 15 games. They caused us problems and it was like a cup final for them.

"We had them watched during the week and they didn't play very well but we knew they would be up for this one and we had to dig in. We definitely missed Tresor Kandol. Maybe after today people will realise how much he means to the team.

"He is very important to us at set plays, for and against, and in open play, but fortunately he has served his one-match suspension now."
