As the only local semi-professional side to get any meaningful action last weekend, Liversedge made the most of it by winning their game and returning to second spot in the Northern Counties East Premier Division.

Yet eyebrows were raised as Steve Newton's men could only narrowly beat basement outfit Brodsworth, so could the bad weather have been a leveller?

That was not an excuse being offered by the boss, who said: "They were as good a side as we have faced all season - and, halfway through the campaign, we have played virtually everyone at least once.

"With ten minutes to go I would have settled for a draw last week, that is how bothered I was.

"Brodsworth have a number of players on loan from Buxton and they are good. If they can keep that side together they will definitely climb the table.

"I'd heard they had a few loan players but I didn't know who they were. Our players all knew them - in fact, one of them got a lift back to Bradford with our lot. I was told that Nicky Law signed many of them when he was Buxton boss.

"As it turned out I'm glad we played because we got all the points. If they keep those players they will take points off a lot of our rivals, so that will suit us.

"We are back to second going into this weekend but that could change, as we have played a lot more games than some.

"It is important we do everything in our power this time to make sure we don't have any results that undo our hard graft."
