CONOR Sellars smiles at the suggestion that City’s interim bosses are finding their first transfer window, well, a bit too easy.
The unveiling of Matty Foulds on Saturday morning to lift the mood after the latest postponement kept the month’s activity ticking along nicely.
The Bradford-born defender became the fifth new face to arrive this month – less than 24 hours after Port Vale-bound Kurtis Guthrie was announced as the third departure following Ben Richards-Everton and Austin Samuels out the door.
A market usually fraught with difficulty and panic continues to go remarkably smoothly from a Bantams perspective.
“We’re having really healthy conversations between Lee (Turnbull), the analysts, myself, Mark (Trueman) and Ryan (Sparks),” said Sellars.
“We’re all collating a lot of evidence for these players, speaking to the right people and getting character references and watching their last games.
“With the number of contacts that Lee has got, we can be in touch with that player in a matter of minutes.
“As long as we keep up the hard work and make sure we’re identifying the right players and giving them a platform when they come in to perform.
“We don’t want players who are not up to the level. We want them to be around it and pushing for a starting place.”
And is the window proving as straightforward for City as it appears from the outside?
“I don’t know about that but it’s just like anything. You prepare the best you can and make sure that people are doing their jobs and being reliable with their sources.
“You’re watching a lot of games and a lot of players.
“What helps now is the technology we can use to watch these players without going to see them live. We have done that as well and it’s trying to combine the two.
“We’re working all hours to make sure we bring in the right one.”
The presence of a full-time recruitment head in Turnbull has been pivotal in the squad shake-up.
After the chaos of recent January windows, there is a definite plan and identified targets about this one.
Things can still change fast – that’s the nature of the mid-season market – but the long hours of preparation have put a structure in place.
Sellars added: “The market moves really quickly. Some people are available then they are not.
“A player will be speaking to a different club, he’s got interest closer to home – there are lots of variables within the recruitment.
“Sometimes you don’t get what you want but you’ve got to quickly move on.
“There are players out there and you’ve got to look for that next best thing.
“We’re looking at four, five or six in certain positions and they aren’t all the same type of player. Some full backs might be different, centre mids are different on our shortlist.
“I’m not saying we’re going to buy one or the other but over the time we’ve got lots of different targets with different qualities.
“We’ve been quite fortunate because we’ve got a few deals done already.
“The movement early on in the window is not as lively but we’ve managed to get a few across the line and again we’re just looking to be even better.”
The postponed games, while hugely frustrating given the run City have been on, have afforded extra time to get deals done.
Sellars and Trueman have been putting in marathon hours – but they can see an end in sight. The clock stops at 11pm on February 1.
Sellars said: “We know it’s going to be a busy month. It’s not a normal month.
“We’ve got to make sure that we’re not working ourselves so much that we can’t concentrate anymore.
“We’ve got to be really clever on which days we go from morning to 12 at night.
“Generally, that’s most days, if I’m honest, but then you're trying to look after yourself to make sure that you’re in the best mind frame.
“It’s a good challenge but also not one that lasts forever. I’m sure we can make up for the sleep in February.
“When you get the reward from that hard work and sign the player you've been after, you want that buzz again.
“When somebody walks through the door at the club and they are there to improve, you get a sense of real achievement.
“You’re straight away thinking, ‘where can we do that next and which target do we need to bring in now?’
“It’s been enjoyable hard work but everyone is pulling together and making sure we’re in the best position possible. It's all about being stronger at the end of the month."
