Brodsworth MW 1 Liversedge 2

Liversedge needed a penalty and an injury-time winner to come from a goal down to beat Northern Counties East Premier Division's basement club Brodsworth MW.

Sedge were the only one of the local semi-pro clubs to beat the storms that buffeted the British Isles at the weekend, and they made the most of it.

Club secretary Bryan Oakes admitted: "We were surprised ourselves that the game was on.

"The weather was poor and Brodsworth's isn't the best ground but their pitch is hardy and it survived. Their playing surface is very, very good and they also played really well on the day.

"They have some loan players in, many of them from Buxton who they appear to have an agreement with, and they are good.

"If they continue to put a side out like they did against us I wouldn't expect they will be down there (at the bottom of the league) for long."

The spirited home side had a good start to the game. They were arguably the best side throughout the first half and took a lead into the break with a goal on the half hour.

A free-kick was swung into the area, Sedge keeper Lee Ashforth parried a header but the rebound was tucked home by Shaun Gormen.

The blow seemed to galvanise the visitors into action but they could not find an equaliser before half-time.

Sedge maintained the pressure and the reward came ten minutes into the second half.

The goal arrived from the penalty spot after Chris Woods was brought down following Nicky Boshell's cross.

It was Boshell himself who confidently stroked the spot-kick past the home keeper and he also had a hand in the last gasp-winner.

It was Matty Fahy who started the move, Boshell rounded defenders to get a cross in and Fahy converted with a well-placed shot low into the corner.
