Bradford Park Avenue boss Benny Phillips had mixed feelings over the wasted weekend but came down on the positive side as he feels the rest will do his players good after eight victories on the trot.

Seven straight wins have cemented their place in second spot in UniBond Division One North. Their other victory in that run saw them progress to the quarter-finals of the West Riding County Cup.

"To be fair the weather was absolutely awful but sometimes a rest is better than a tough fixture or another run of the mill training session," said Phillips.

"We have so many injuries at the moment that are niggling little things, the break may give everyone that couple of days extra recovery time.

"None of the problems are serious but they are all ones that a few days off will help. Let's face it, at this stage of the season the fitness of the players is not going to be affected by a few days with the feet up."

Avenue were due to host Lancaster City at 2pm, as the visitors had a charity event at their own club which they needed to get back to boost the takings.

"Once the game was called off we didn't get any training done but we did get together and do one or two things for the Christmas DVD," added the manager.

"It killed the day though because we still had to get to the ground for an early kick-off and the lads were coming in from before 10am on Saturday. By the time we had done the stuff for the club we sent the lads home.

"They will be back in tomorrow (Tuesday) for training and the reserves have a game on Wednesday.

"Mark Jones, Griff Jones and Paul Gedman should all be involved in that game for the second team.

"A gentle training session one day then a competitive game the next to improve the match fitness is just what all three of them need. Having games postponed creates all kinds of problems but, there can be plus points on certain occasions."
