The Guiseley board were so impressed with Steve Kittrick when they interviewed him on Tuesday for their vacant managerial role that they offered him the job on the spot.

But Kittrick's former club, Ossett Town - one of Guis-eley's UniBond Premier Division rivals - were not happy when they found out he was quitting.

They claimed they knew nothing of his interest in the Guiseley job.

"We had to delay the ann-ouncement until Steve had led Ossett for the final time because they had a game that evening," said Guiseley chairman Phil Rogerson.

Town were knocked out of the West Riding County Cup by Bradford Park Avenue on Tuesday.

"There was nothing underhand in it. Steve came across really well in the interview and we offered him the job on the spot.

"That might have taken him by surprise but he felt it was an opportunity not to be missed and accepted. To his credit, he said he wanted to keep it under wraps so that it wouldn't affect Ossett's chances of beating Avenue.

"That was not a problem to us so we made a statement on our website on Wednesday.

"Steve has local knowledge and has a lot to add. We feel his experience at this level will help us win the league and gain automatic promotion to the Blue Square North.

"He brings a very capable assistant with him in Wayne Benn."

Benn began his career with Bradford City and played most of his football following his release from Valley Parade for local rivals Avenue.

His appointment has not marked the end of Mark Ellis' time at Nethermoor. The former Bantams favourite Ellis is retained as first-team coach.

"Mark is a bubbly, lively character and a very good coach," added Rogerson.

"Steve knows people and has an excellent attitude. With Wayne added to the mix, the three of them have the respect of the players and will get the most out them."
