Ossett Town 0, Bradford Park Avenue 1

A single second-half strike took Bradford Park Avenue through to the quarter-finals of the West Riding County Cup tonight at the expense of higher-ranking hosts Ossett Town.

The home side, from a division above Avenue in the UniBond structure, started well and almost broke the deadlock in the 12th minute.

A free-kick 20 yards out gave Jamie Walshaw the chance to curl an effort in on the strong wind and Avenue keeper Jon Worsnop touched it onto the bar and over for a corner.

Worsnop's predecessor in Avenue's No 1 jersey, Piotr Skiba, was in goal for Ossett but he was not troubled by the Bradford club's first chance. The ball found Liam Flynn 12 yards out but he hit his shot over the target.

Other former Avenue players featuring for the home side were Lee Stratford and Danny Meadowcroft, while former striker Scott Jackson began the night on the bench.

The goalless first half was soon consigned to the back of the mind when Avenue made the breakthrough three minutes into the second period.

The fierce breeze was again evident as Alistair Brown's lob from the right wing looped over Skiba and straight into the net.

Worsnop made two fine saves to ensure Avenue remained just in front.

Only five minutes after the opener, the Avenue stopper palmed a Carl Fothergill shot onto the woodwork. The rebound was slotted in by Walshaw but the assistant-referee's flag went up straight away, ruling him offside.

With a little over six minutes remaining, Worsnop pulled another top-drawer save out to deny Town's Rob O'Brien.

Avenue could have finished with a two-goal victory but youngster John Cullen, who had come on from the bench at half-time, was just off target. His 88th-minute shot sailed over Skiba but also over the bar.

Avenue spokesman James Grayson confirmed that a former Avenue and Bantams star will be making the draw for the last eight at West Riding headquarters Woodlesford on Thursday.
