SWAPPING the top end of League One for the bottom of League Two may seem a strange career move.

But Graham Coughlan was keen to do that earlier this month so he could be closer to his Sheffield home.

Having left Bristol Rovers, he has taken on a Mansfield side without a league win since the end of October.

But they have drawn both games in the Irishman’s tenure – and came from 2-0 with two late goals to grab a point against Port Vale on Boxing Day.

Coughlan said: “Hopefully that will give them confidence. They are creating chances.

“One thing is for sure – we are getting honesty, we're getting hard work, we're getting graft, we're getting commitment from the players – and that's a start.”

Gary Bowyer can understand why his opposite number at Valley Parade this weekend has upped sticks.

“Personal circumstances played a massive part for Graham,” said the City boss.

“Who can begrudge someone who has been away from their family for a length of time he has.

“Mansfield are a good club, a big club and over the last two years have invested a lot into their squad. He obviously sees that as an opportunity for him.

“Knowing Graham and how he was at Bristol Rovers, it’s going to be another tough game.”

Coughlan admits the hectic holiday period has limited his chance to get stuck into his new squad.

"We've not had much chance to work hard really. My working hard and the players' working hard are two different things.

"I can't wait to settle down and get our ideas and philosophies across."
