Two Queensbury RL players have made a great account of themselves, and their club, representing Yorkshire in a mini series against the Serbian national side.
Callum Murgatroyd and Tom Hainsworth received the call-up for the games against Serbia at York and then Stanningley earlier in the month.
Murgatroyd (loose forward) featured in both games, while Hainsworth missed the first tie in York following a groin injury he picked up while playing for his club.
Alan Redmonds, head coach at Queensbury, describes the players as exemplary.
He said: “It’s brilliant for the club to see. These are senior lads so it just proves with hard work and dedication opportunities like this are open to the older lads, not just the young ones.
“It is no surprise they’ve been selected though. They’re completely committed to the club, a real example to the young players in my squad and the juniors at the club.”
Yorkshire won both games against the travelling Serbs - many of whom play for 2019 Challenge Cup debutants Red Star Belgrade.
Redmonds was in awe of the players as he went along to watch them play in the second game at Stanningley.
He said: “They both played fantastic - Tom’s defensive work and Callum's attack. I was amazed with Tom’s recovery from his injury. Both lads played four times in eight days.”
The Lionhearts, a collective of representative players from the Yorkshire Men's League, are often chosen to play in series or friendlies against international opposition.
Murgatroyd and Hainsworth weren’t the only Queensbury stars in action. Centre Jack McMillan was called up to represent the Scotland universities team for their four-nations series against England, Ireland and Wales.
McMillan started every game for Scotland, bagging himself a try in a man of the match performance against Wales.
Redmonds said he and the club were proud of all three lads and he can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.
