The veterans tournament circuit rolled into Preston last weekend for the Northern Masters table tennis competition and for Steve Kosmowsky from Dewsbury Tog, it was a great start to his first event in the over-70s.
Steve has been a regular competitor through the different age groups and has been reasonably successful.
He was unseeded in Preston in the singles and had a tough start in Group Five along with the number five seed Herbert Neubauer from Switzerland.
Steve beat him in four games and made the knock-out stage as group winner.
The second day saw Steve begin his singles quest with a 3-2 win over Ron Bennett. He then faced number four seed Barry Hill from Dorset and came from 2-0 down to win in five games.
Next up was top seed Brian Hill from Lincoln in the semi-final and once again Steve had to come from behind, taking the last two games 11-9,11-9.
His opponent in the final was number six seed Maurice Newman from Leicester and Steve was a convincing 3-0 winner to make it a fantastic start to his first 70s event.
Keith Powell, from Hermits, continued his dominance in the over-80s. He won the doubles with Mike Meredith and took the singles without dropping a game, beating Meredith in the final.
