A YEAR ago, Jonny Maxted was making his name as the FA Cup hero in Guiseley’s goal.
Maxted’s antics to defy Accrington Stanley over two first-round games – and a penalty shoot-out – would earn him a move to Lancashire in January.
The 24-year-old had faced City in Guiseley’s traditional pre-season encounter at Nethermoor.
But tomorrow he will do it on the bigger stage as he makes his fifth league start for Stanley.
Maxted deputises for the suspended Connor Ripley following the former City loanee’s red card in last week’s loss at Shrewsbury.
That defeat ended an impressive 10-match unbeaten run for John Coleman’s side – and the long-serving boss felt Ripley’s 16th-minute dismissal for catching striker Lee Angol was pivotal.
Coleman said: “It levelled the playing field because the first 15 minutes we were breathtaking. We had five shots in the first seven minutes, they couldn’t get the ball off us.
“We have got to realise we lost the game because of a mistake by someone else and not because of us.
“So, we’ll have to go on another 10-game unbeaten run.
“We are a good side and we showed that with 11 men and with chasing the game with 10 men.”
Accrington have made a scintillating start to life in League One after last season’s promotion – and once again the prolific Billy Kee has been at the forefront.
After netting 25 times in their successful League Two campaign, Kee has scored five since stepping up a level.
City will also have to keep close tabs on 21-year-old former Derby junior Offrande Zanzala, who joined Accrington permanently in the summer after impressing on loan last season.
He followed up a first goal against Doncaster 10 days ago with two more in the Checkatrade Trophy win over Macclesfield.
Zanzala said: “It has given me that confidence boost to go on and keep scoring and get in that habit of hitting the ball in the back of the net.”
Coleman, who made eight changes for that game, said: “There are a lot of players pushing for starts. The ones who they’ve come in for will be looking over their shoulder.”
