WEEK 13 of the Spen Winter Sweep proved lucky for Wayne Ditchfield (Chorley).
The Waterloo champion trailed Kez Smith (Crossgates) 20-15 in the last 16 only to take the last six ends to edge a 21-20 victory.
After that, Ditchfield showed his class, beating Andy Thornton (Barrow-in-Furness) 21-15, Ben Gloag (Hyde) 21-8 and former Waterloo winner Chris Mordue (Pudsey) 21-12.
On what was a fine but cold day, Gloag won the opening end against Ditchfield but lost the next seven to fall 9-1 adrift.
The Hyde man then scored a single and a double but he was swimming against the tide as Ditchfield increased his margin to 19-4, included four consecutive doubles.
Three more winning ends then took Gloag to eight before he was finished off by a skilful opponent.
Stuart King (Asa Briggs) faced Mordue in the other semi-final but had to recover from 9-0 to 13-7.
Mordue then led 17-9 in an excellent contest but, despite having no luck, King pulled back to 17-14.
Each player then notched two singles before Mordue got over the line.
The final, between two notable competitors, promised to be close but Ditchfield did not allow it to be.
He opened up a 9-3 lead by the 11th end, which increased to 15-4 five ends later.
Mordue hit back to 17-12 but two consecutive doubles ended his comeback.
