MICHAEL Sweeney won seven successive ends in both his semi-final and final to win his first Spen Winter Sweep of the season.
The Netherton bowler defeated Frank Griffin (Mirfield Old Bank) 21-7 in the semi-finals and prolific Winter Sweep winner Mark Regan (Brighouse Sports) 21-17 in the decider.
Griffin, who had earlier dispatched Chris Mordue (Pudsey) 21-11, had been playing extremely well all day in the chilly conditions but his last-four clash was a game too far, although he did lead 4-0.
From 9-7 ahead, Sweeney won seven straight ends and finished matters off in the 20th end with a single.
The second semi-final was already underway by then between Duncan Reeves (Netherton Cons) and Regan, who led 12-0 and 18-1.
Reeves then had a mini-revival by scoring six and five in succession, sandwiched by a Regan single, but it was too late to affect the result.
Regan led 3-1 in the final before Sweeney's spree, which included six twos, to make it 14-3.
Over the next eight ends, however, Sweeney only scored two – a double on the 15th – as Regan pulled back to 16-13 down.
Regan did score another four but Sweeney got the five he needed to break his winter duck.
