Buildbase FA Trophy first qualifying round replay: South Shields 4 Farsley Celtic 3 (after extra-time, 1-1 90min)
THERE was another epic battle between Farsley Celtic and South Shields last night as the Celts exited the Buildbase FA Trophy at Mariners Park in a first qualifying round replay.
It was the third time the Evo-Stik League rivals had met in October, and it was a Halloween fright for Adam Lakeland’s Premier Division promotion chasers as his side were knocked out of a second cup competition by Division One North title favourites South Shields.
Farsley had travelled to Shields’ Mariners Park a fortnight earlier and lost a penalty shoot-out after drawing the Evo-Stik Integro League Cup first- round tie 2-2.
There was no spot-kick shoot-out last night but there was equal drama as five goals were shared in extra-time.
The replay was necessary following a 1-1 draw at Throstle Nest at the weekend.
The Mariners took a fourth-minute lead through Gavin Cogdon, and the Celts had to be patient before snatching a stoppage-time equaliser, with Ryan Watson netting.
Just into the first period of extra-time, Robert Briggs put the north- eastern side back in front, and a goal from Andy Stephenson doubled their lead.
Farsley hit back through club captain Danny Ellis and Luke Parkin before Briggs’s second won the tie with less than three minutes remaining.
Thackley were ahead in their West Riding County Cup tie but were beaten 3-2 at home by FC Halifax Town, who thus stayed on course for a potential quarter-final meeting with last season’s Vanarama National League North rivals Bradford Park Avenue.
The Shaymen won promotion but, after a bright start in the Vanarama National League, they hit the buffers, and last night’s victory was their first in October, but they had to work for it.
They conceded early as former Avenue midfielder Nathan Hotte was guilty of a foul in the area and Mike Garrod stepped up to fire the resulting penalty past Halifax keeper Tom Nicholson.
The visitors levelled when George Waring netted after controlling a 28th-minute cross, and they took the lead when Ben Tomlinson created room for a shot from the edge of the area eight minutes later.
But the Dennyboys hit back as Joe Hughes threw himself at a Jamie Underwood cross to head home on the stroke of half-time.
Tomlinson bagged his brace in the second half to win the second-round tie and book a meeting with the winner of next week’s Selby Town and Avenue tie.
Silsden were dumped out of a third cup competition this term as they went down 4-0 at AFC Blackpool in the Hallmark Security League's LWC Drinks Division One Cup.
The Cobbydalers lost both halves 2-0 on the west coast as Blackpool’s Ben Duffield netted a goal in each half, while both Martin Baird and Conah Bishop were also on target.
Liversedge shared the points with visitors AFC Mansfield in a thrilling eight-goal Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division clash.
The lead changed hands several times before Sedge found themselves 4-2 up with 15 minutes to play but had to settle for a 4-4 draw.
The scoring began in the seventh minute and ended with goals from the penalty spot.
Sedge skipper Tom Jackson gave the home side the lead but the visitors’ Matt Mansfield equalised soon after.
The goals came thick and fast after the break, with Cameron Dear putting Mansfield in front before Andy Kenyon levelled.
Strikes from Bradley Riley and Joe Kenny put Sedge in a strong position but former Farsley Celtic striker Nick Guest pegged one back for the visitors before Linton Karkach slotted in from the spot nine minutes from time.
Eccleshill United leap-frogged Campion in Division One with a 2-0 win at Armthorpe Welfare.
The Eagles had Jonny Irving to thank as he hit a second-half brace.
He was later denied a hat-trick by an offside flag when he turned in a Luke Harrop cross.
