WYKE Wanderers, who had their pre-season friendly cancelled because Stanningley Old Boys couldn’t raise a team, began their West Yorkshire League Division One campaign with a 2-1 win at Boroughbridge.
Wanderers started the game well, with the pace of Karl Fawcett, plus Joe Entwhistle and Matt Conway, causing all sorts of problems for the home side.
It was no surprise when Wyke took the lead on 30 minutes when a through ball found Entwhistle in space inside the penalty area, and he drove the ball past the goalkeeper.
The lead was short-lived, however, as ten minutes later, a cross wasn’t cut out and Boroughbridge equalised at the back post from a header.
The second half continued as the first, with Wanderers again taking the game to the home side, and on the hour Wyke went ahead when Martin Hall swung in a cross that crept in at the far post.
Wanderers, looking to wrap up the match, conceded a penalty after a tangle in their box, but it was brilliantly saved to earn Wyke all three points.
Wyke secretary Dave Ryan said: “The man of the match award was difficult because there were many good performances, but midfielder Paulo Lewandowski took the acclaim for the great job he did playing in front of the back four.”
