Former Leeds striker Ian Moore has joined Hartlepool and faces an early return when his new club visits Elland Road on Saturday, September 8.
Moore, 30, was released by United in May. He cost £50,000 from Burnley in 2005 and made 64 appearances in league and cup, scoring five goals.
United say tonight's friendly at York City will go ahead, despite reports suggesting the club's off-field problems may cause the match to be cancelled.
Norwegian international striker Tore Andre Flo is in the squad and set to play his first game since fracturing his foot on his full debut in January.
