There will be a void at Dennyfield next season no matter who steps up to central defence because of the departure of two stalwarts during the close season.

The curtain has come down on the Thackley careers of club captain Craig Sugden and former England youth international James Riley.

The central defensive pairing had won as many games for Thackley as any sharp-shooting duo up front.

"James has gone to Harrogate Railway Athletic in the UniBond League, and he goes with my best wishes," said Thackley manager John Boyle.

"I really hope he does well. It is a higher level than he played at here but it is one that he can cope with quite easily. He wants to test himself in the UniBond and I have no doubt that he has the ability.

"Suggy is going to Liversedge. I'm also disappointed to lose him - especially to one of our main rivals - but again I wish him all the best.

"He was umming and ahhing about leaving this level of football altogether but has made the best choice.

"This is a big city and Sedge is near his home and his workplace. He can make training or pick-up time for a game in minutes, while it could add an hour to his journey coming over to Dennyfield.

"I would prefer that for him than to see him playing at a lower level. I think the move will do him good."

The absence of Sugden and Riley from the award winners at the club's presentation night reflected their injury-ravaged season. Both underwent long spells on the sidelines.

Dean Walters was management player of the year and top scorer, while Andy Howland picked up the committee's accolade, with Nicky Matthews getting the players' player of the year.

Boyle added: "As a skipper, Suggy has been a fantastic servant to the club and as an elder statesman a great influence on the younger players."
