Former City boss Terry Dolan is backing Stuart McCall to bring success back to Valley Parade - but has warned fans not to expect too much too soon.

The Guiseley chief believes fans must remain patient as the Bantams manager adapts to his first role in the managerial hot seat.

A week of frustration for McCall in chasing his first signing was capped off by news that striker Spencer Weir-Daley, whom City had agreed terms with, has joined League Two rivals Notts County instead.

But Dolan, who was McCall's manager when City reached the play-offs for the old First Division in 1988, said: "He will have weeks like this when he feels he's banging his head against a brick wall. Other weeks, everything will go for him."

"People have to realise that just because Stuart McCall has come back to Bradford doesn't mean that everything is going to be hunky-dory all the time.

"He will be learning every week and fans must have a bit of patience."

The 21-year-old Weir-Daley, who made five appearances for the Bantams on loan from Nottingham Forest last season, turned down a new deal at the City Ground to join Forest's neighbours County on a two-year deal.

McCall said: "I am very disappointed not to have got Spencer.

"We have been speaking with him over the last few weeks and agreed terms but the day after he came up last week he called to say that he was signing for Notts County as he didn't want to move away from the Midlands ."

Dolan does not believe that City will have to adopt a more physical approach in League Two.

Having managed Rochdale and York City in the bottom tier, Dolan said: "I don't think there is much difference between League One and League Two. The difference if you move up or down a division is in strikers' ability to put the ball in the back of the net and in defenders' ability to minimise their mistakes.

"The best football teams are the ones who can adapt and play different types of football depending on the particular game."

Bradford-born Dolan, who used to play for City, also expressed his delight at recent developments off the field at Valley Parade.

He said: "It's great to see Bradford people working behind the scenes at the club.

"Having people from the city there is valuable and is something supporters can relate to."

Meanwhile, former City midfielder Paul Bolland has denied rumours that he could return to Valley Parade from Grimsby Town.

Bolland, who lives in the Bradford area, said: "I am contracted to Grimsby Town for another two years and am going nowhere.

"I am excited about the new season and reckon we have a really good squad. We finished last season strongly and if we start like that we will give ourselves a great chance."
