PHIL Parkinson hailed a “moment of quality” from Tony McMahon as City revved up their push nearer the League One play-off mix.

City moved up to eighth with last night’s 2-0 win over Southend at Valley Parade. McMahon opened the scoring with a stunning free-kick before top scorer James Hanson made sure of victory with his third goal in two games.

Parkinson praised McMahon for prising open the visitors with his fifth goal of the season.

“The first goal is very important in games like that and it was a moment of real quality,” said the City boss.

“It was a great free-kick against a very good keeper. He’s one of the best in the league, if not the best, and it was a magnificent effort.

“After our win at the weekend and their defeat, it certainly wasn’t going to be an open game. They set themselves up to be hard to break down but the goal was crucial.”

Hanson’s header took him into double figures as City closed to within three points of Millwall in the last play-off place.

Parkinson added: “We’ve won three out the last four so we’re creeping up the table nicely. We’ve just got to make sure we use these last two excellent performances as a real confidence-booster.

“We need to remind ourselves of all the hard work that has gone in to these two wins.”

Rory McArdle was missing after his wife Elizabeth gave birth the day before. Parkinson singled out his replacement Nathan Clarke for extra praise in the latest City clean sheet.

“I thought he was superb,” he said. “Every time Clarkey’s been called upon, he’s been tremendous.

“It’s not just that but the way he conducts himself around the training ground and the way he helps with the young defenders. He’s been a tremendous signing for us.

“He adds leadership quality to the team when he plays.

“Two years ago he captained a team to the play-off final so he knows the job in hand. He played with real experience.”
