The club's annual awards night, run as always along with Avenue's supporters club, was a rousing success but also a bitter-sweet evening of presentations.

The outgoing former management duo were recognised for their efforts, the departing Mark Wilson was high profile and - like neighbours City - they had to bring back the man who picked up the leading scorer's accolade.

When Benny Phillips was brought in on a full-time basis midway through April, it was obvious there would be changes.

The end of every season sees comings and goings but this one was special because people knew who was leaving and who was staying and everyone was full of excitement as to who would be joining for the new campaign.

The club's player of the year was Liam Flynn. The flying left winger had a disappointing end to the season but he had been in scintillating form for most of it.

The players themselves voted for centre back Gary Shaw.

Shaw skippered the side more times than club captain Lee Connor over the season. He was the most consistent player and one of the reasons why the team reached the play-offs and deserved more.

The top scorer was Neil Ross, despite him being farmed out on loan to Ossett Town back at the beginning of March.

With Phillips looking to build his own squad, after settling on his new backroom staff this week, Ross's future could lie with a permanent move away from Horsfall.

Another player bowing out was Wilson, a crowd favourite and an irrepressible character who'll be missed in the dressing room, at training and even in the players' bar after games.

He took with him the junior supporters' player of the year and the fanzine player of the year trophies.

The fanzine merit award went jointly to Phil Sharpe and Clive Freeman. That was a very popular choice and showed just how much respect and thanks the club's supporters wanted to bestow on the pair.

The most poignant award of the evening, however, must surely have been the selection of Avenue's clubman of the year.

That went to Sharpe outright - a genuine winner of an accolade that comes from the heart.

Visitors to the club's website have been encouraged to cast votes throughout the season and that culminated in David Cooke being named their player of year and also had young former Bantams striker Kevin Sanasy picking up their goal of the season award.
