The players' player of the year was a close-run thing but eventual winner Mark Bentham was a hugely popular recipient.

"Did he deserve it? The players said he did so that's good enough for anyone," said Cobbydalers boss Paul Schofield diplomatically.

The manager felt any of his first-team squad could have picked it up.

"There were seven of them in serious contention for it but when all the votes had been counted it was Mark who came out on top.

"It is a real coveted award - being voted the best by your peers is always very rewarding."

Aaron Hollindrake was top scorer, although was left empty-handed at the presentation evening.

The club do not give a memento for the leading scorer but they do vote for a goal of the season.

That went to Thomas Dibb for his late winner at Newcastle Town.

The manager's player of the year was young defender Danny McNulty.

"Aaron deserves a special mention because he has banged in more goals than anyone else in what is his first season at this level, but we don't have an award for that.

"We prefer to give something for the best or most important goal of the season because that reflects more on the team aspect.

"Thomas came off the bench about eight minutes from the end of a very difficult match at Newcastle and scored what was to be the crucial goal in a 3-2 victory with only his second touch of the ball. It earned the club a good win but three very valuable points.

"All the awards were well received on the night - thumbs up all round. Danny has produced amazing consistency for his age. Let's just hope he can kick on and become a first- team regular for many years."
