Simon Ainge reckons City can live up to their billing as the big boys of League Two.
Expectations will be high as the Stuart McCall era kicks off at the Intersonic Stadium.
But Ainge, who has put pen to paper on a new two-year contract, reckons those hopes are justified.
"We should be expected to do well because we are a big club," said the teenage defender, who played 11 times last term. "We were a big club in League One so of course people will be looking at us to be up there.
"We obviously need some more players but with the ones we've got here already, I can't see why we won't go back up."
Ainge, Joe Colbeck, Tom Penford and Craig Bentham have all signed new deals as they prepare for a fresh start under McCall.
Ainge said: "I think it's great news and will give a big boost to all the lads. Sometimes it's good to have a change and he's obviously a fans favourite so it will create a real buzz.
"The fans were great towards the end of last season, especially when we were more or less down. They deserve a much better season and I think it's time we started winning a few games again.
"The last couple of years we haven't really done anything but sometimes I think you have to go backwards to go forwards again."
Ainge has appeared both as a centre half and right back but admits he is happy to play anywhere.
"I'll go in goal if they want me, anywhere as long as I'm on the pitch. I know David Wetherall said I might be playing right back more next season but obviously we'll have to wait and see.
"I'm just pleased to be given a new contract, especially with not knowing at the time who the manager was going to be. That was my aim at the start of the year and now hopefully I can look at securing a place in the team.
"Last season was hard because of the circumstances but I've learned a lot about the physical side of the game. I've still got a lot of work to do but as long as I keep improving then hopefully I'll get my chance."
City have also handed a contract to 17-year-old striker Luke Medley, who played twice for the reserves after being released by Tottenham.
