Wigan have confirmed that former Bradford City boss Paul Jewell has resigned as manager.
Assistant Chris Hutchings - another former City boss - takes over the helm.
The Latics went into the final day of the Premeirship season in the bottom three but survived after a 2-1 win over Sheffield United, who went down in their place.
It is the second time Jewell has parted ways with a club soon after keeping them in the Premiership.
In 1999/00 he pulled off one of the most unlikely escapes ever by keeping City in the division, again on the last day of the season with a 1-0 win over Liverpool, but tendered his resignation the following month before taking over at Sheffield Wednesday.
Things did not go well at Hillsborough and he was sacked after only eight months, with the Owls struggling due to financial problems off the pitch and footballing ones on it.
When Jewell was installed at the JJB Stadium, Wigan were in the third tier of English football but he led their charge into the top-flight for the first time in their history.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan expects Jewell to be out of the game for six months, claiming the stress of keeping the club in the top flight had taken its toll on 42-year-old Jewell's health.
"He has been really, really struggling with nerves over the last few months and that's not Paul Jewell at all," said Whelan. "He's physically drained. It's affected his health. "He'll be back in this game, probably not with Wigan, but he'll be back."
Hutchings succeeded Jewell at Valley Parade but was sacked after only 12 league matches.
